As we work towards improving the PASS Election process, I am excited to share the updates we have made to the Election timeline this year. Our goal is to increase community participation, encouraging both candidates to submit applications and eligible voters to submit their ballots.

We had three key objectives in planning for this year’s Election:
- Shorten the timeline
- Increase the number of qualified candidates
- Increase voter turnout of contributing and engaged members

The Election process typically begins in mid-May with the NomCom call for interest, but this year, we are pushing the timeline back to late August, in order to meet the Election objectives set by the Board. We see an uptick in engagement at the start and end of the Election cycle, and we hope that by shortening the timeline, there will be an increase in engagement throughout this period.

Another challenge we are addressing this year is the low turnout of candidates. Running for the Board is a big decision, but it is an important one. Different skillsets and perspectives are essential to our progress and success as an organization, and we are striving for representation across geographical locations and functional roles within the data community. From my own experience, even though it is a considerable time commitment and responsibility, being on the Board has helped me develop my career in ways that I wouldn't have anticipated. It is an invaluable experience.

We will be focusing energy into better engaging the active and contributing members of our community, and encouraging them to consider running for the Board of Directors. We are currently seeking and mentoring potential candidates that meet the ideal description for the 2019/20 Director-at-Large seats - US/Canada & Open, LATAM & Open, Open – and if you are interested in putting yourself forward for this year’s election, please contact governance@pass.org or any of us on the Board for more details.

To help us drive awareness and increase exposure, I am pleased to announce that we will be accepting applications from October 10 to 15, 2018. Applications will be available on the Election page on September 26, 2018.

This updated Election period will give candidates an opportunity to campaign face-to-face at PASS Summit, leveraging resources like PASStv and the many networking events we have throughout the conference. Voting will also go live during PASS Summit 2018, and we hope that these combined efforts will make it easier than ever to cast your vote and select the candidates who best represent you.

Of course, voting is not restricted to PASS Summit attendees. We encourage all members of our community to participate in this year’s Election and submit their ballots. A Vote Now button will appear on your myPASS page during the balloting period, taking you directly to the voting booth.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to complete your PASS profile by June 1, 2018 to be eligible to vote in this year’s election. We will be adding a reminder to the PASS portal in the coming weeks.

This community is run by data professionals, for data professionals, and we need your participation to help shape the future of PASS. Please do your part to give back to the community, every vote counts!

Thank you,

Wendy Pastrick
