24HOP Speaker Feature: Kendra Little

Kendra Little loves teaching data professionals how to build powerful indexes using advanced techniques in SQL Server and she’s excited to share these with you at PASS Summit in October! In the meantime, join Kendra at her upcoming 24HOP session on July 19, Why Did My Clever Index Change Backfire?

  1. How did you get started with teaching people to architect and tune SQL Server for performance?
My very first teaching session was when I was a database administrator. I had a group of coworkers who were very smart, and who needed to write TSQL queries to help solve problems at work. They just didn't have much experience with writing efficient queries. I put together a casual workshop to go over TSQL patterns with them, and got my first taste of how fun teaching can be.

DBAs and developers can really start teaching anytime at work, and I encourage everyone to try it and see if they like it! You may surprise yourself.

  2. What would you say is the most common mistake when working with databases?
I think the most common mistake is to get too comfortable. It's human nature to think that because something worked yesterday, it'll work the same way today: but things change fast and we have to constantly be ready to adapt. As our data grows and our user behaviors change, we need to change our code, data structures, and processes instead of relying on our old 'best practices'.

  3. What are the top three items attendees will learn in your session?
In my 24 HOP session attendees will learn how to test and make sure they don't hit big problems with indexed views, filtered indexes, and indexed computed columns. Bonus: they'll also learn about goofs I've made!

Make sure you check out my session at PASS Summit 2017 in October where I’ll be covering all of this and more!

  4. What is one interesting fact people may not know about you?
My dog is from Taiwan, although I've never traveled there. I found him at a rescue organization north of Seattle and it was love at first wag.
