BA Day Atlanta Speaker Feature: Patrick LeBlanc

  1. How did you get started in the data world?
My blog post, How did I become a DBA, from November 2009 answers this question perfectly. In short, it was an accident. I needed a better way to track information for my job as a Mortgage Underwriter, so I built an Access database. From that point, I knew what I should be doing. I earned a master’s degree in Information Systems and the rest is history.

  2. What are some current and/or future trends you’re excited about?
The thing that I am most excited about is empowering end-users. It’s just that simple. So many data professionals tend to hoard the data. I, on the other hand, want to put it in the hands of the people that own it. With the recent releases of Power BI and other products, I believe that you will see more and more collaboration between IT professionals and end-users. Instead of, “we build, you consume,” it will be more, “let’s build together.”

  3. Looking back at your data focused career, what is one professional advice you wish you knew when you first started?
Always be willing to share what you learn. Initially, I thought my knowledge was my knowledge, not realizing that the more you share, the more you learn.

  4. You often vlog on the Guy in a Cube YouTube channel, what is one video you recommend your attendees to view before BA Day?
Wow, there are so many great videos, but this one on Dynamic filtering with Power BI is really good.  Take a peek at this video to get a sense of my style of presenting and something you might learn more about in the session.

  5. Considering your bio, what else would you like attendees to know about you?
I am somewhat of a T-shirt-aholic. I am constantly looking and shopping for different and strange T-shirts. I am also a huge family person. On June 28, I will be married for 20 years and I have two great kids, a 16-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter.
