HQ Team Feature: Cathrine Wilhelmsen

When did you join HQ and what are the main responsibilities of your role as Community Evangelist?
I signed the contract during PASS Summit 2016 and officially started on November 1, 2016. As a Community Evangelist, I work closely with Community Engagement Specialist Amanda Martin on finding ways to grow and engage the community, as well as increasing the value of being a PASS member. I'm an ambassador for PASS online and onsite at events, and I'm one of the main links between the community and PASS HQ. One of my main responsibilities is to coordinate SQLSaturdays all over the world and mentor SQLSaturday organizers.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
Working with community members! There are so many passionate volunteers in our community who go above and beyond to help others by organizing Local Group meetings, Virtual Group meetings, and SQLSaturdays, or by speaking, blogging, and sharing their knowledge. Every day I see how they make a difference in their local communities, and I hear so many stories of people who have had their lives turned upside down and their careers skyrocket after getting involved with PASS. I love attending events where I can meet people in person, and it's fantastic seeing someone brand new to PASS light up when they realize they're now part of a global community with more opportunities for training and learning than they have time for.

What can PASS community members look forward to in 2017? Anything you can share?
We've just launched our new brand on, and next up is the SQLSaturday rebranding! I'm currently working on building a new SQLSaturday resource website with information, guides and how-to videos, to help new and existing SQLSaturday organizers. With the rebranding, we might also see some changes to the SQLSaturday reports organizers use… :)

What do you like to do outside of work?
I was active in the PASS community before I accepted this job, as a speaker, blogger, organizer, and volunteer who traveled all over the world. I still love doing those things, but now I'm extremely lucky that it's all part of my job! Outside of that, I love hiking and spending time outside, from exploring volcanoes in Iceland to climbing waterfalls in the Rocky Mountains.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
Whenever I'm in a new place, I send postcards to my parents, sister and niece. Everyone's constantly connected on their phones and computers, which makes it just that little more special to send and receive actual mail. It's a small thing, but a nice way to keep in touch with my family.

What’s a recent film you watched or book you read?
I recently discovered that all the series, seasons, and movies in the Star Trek franchise are now available on Netflix! So now I have a goal of watching everything again. I'm currently halfway through The Original Series, and I'm having so much fun watching awful-amazing ’60s sci-fi :)
